To: Visitor From: A.L.S. Director Affordable Living Services is a non-profit organization given a 501(0)(3) status in December 1995. Services are offered at no cost, as they are funded by grants and donations. The organization's focus is offering housing that is affordable to low-income individuals, primarily people with disabilities. The method of the agency is to empower citizens with information that is readily accessible to they can better choose between affordable alternatives, and secondly, to offer, when available, specific properties owned by the agency for rent or purchase at a rate that is not a burden to them. The value of such an organization and focus for any community will be to increase the number of affordable properties for low-income residents, to decrease the cycle of hopelessness, to foster pride in home ownership, to stabilize lives, and to allow people resources for other needs in their lives. People should not have to wait months for waiting lists to open up, just to get on a list. This organization helps a person choose by sharing options from a computer-assisted data bank; and it will help people with one very important aspect in their lives - their housing. Since our work has begun, numerous homeless individuals have taken living quarters and have adapted, with supports. Many others were guided along by telephone consultations. Searching for adequate housing is not easy for a lot of people. With a limited staff and resources, we have started to make a difference.
