Homelessness affects every community, all age groups, all racial and ethnic groups, and families with children, as well as individuals. The reality of homelessness contradicts the stereotypical chronic alcoholic and street person suffering from mental illness. In fact, studies show that more than 25 percent of people experiencing homelessness are working. The number of homeless families with children has increased significantly over the past yen years, making children the fastest growing group of people experiencing homelessness. Today, the average age of a homeless person in this country is nine years old. Affordable Living, the agency, is designed partly to increase the public's awareness that people are experiencing homelessness in their communities for a variety of reasons, including domestic violence, loss of a job, mental illness, health problems, substance abuse, or the inability to afford decent housing. Many people have few or zero options. Help is needed to create safe places for people to call "home". You are encouraged to volunteer or make donation to us to help solve the problems faced by homeless people. We are experienced and have helpful network connections. Opening doors, with supports, to the needy is definitely part of the solution, as we can see it. |
